Compositions Glossary

This glossary is a comprehensive list of product compositions offered by Washington Mills Ceramics including: ceramic, plastic, and steel media for mass finishing industries. Each composition is accompanied by a brief description – physical and chemical characteristics, applications, bulk density, and color.

DURAMEDIA®

DURAMEDIA® 10

DURAMEDIA® 10 is an extremely hard, fine grained, abrasive-free, ceramic media. It is a proven choice for use in chemically accelerated processes due to its exceptional impact resistance. The most common applications include: burnishing, polishing, light deburring, and driving loose abrasives. (85 lbs. /cubic foot, color: ivory)

DURAMEDIA® 20 / F

DURAMEDIA® 20/F is an aluminum oxide based ceramic media that is versatile for general purpose and mildly abrasive mass finishing. This media can offer a low wear rate with a reasonable metal removal rate. (85 lbs. /cubic foot, color: white)

DURAMEDIA® 30

DURAMEDIA® 30 is a fine grain aluminum oxide based ceramic media product that provides a smooth finish while still allowing for fast metal removal with medium wear. It is used in high performance cutting, deburring, and surface improvement. (95 lbs. /cubic foot, color: light gray)

DURAMEDIA® 40

DURAMEDIA® 40 is an extremely fast cutting, aluminum oxide based ceramic media that provides a fine finish with maximum metal removal in a minimal amount of time. This ceramic media is used for rapid cut down, radiusing, deburring, and surface improvement. (100 lbs. /cubic foot, color: tan)

DURAMEDIA® 50 / SC

DURAMEDIA® 50 / SC is a finely graded silicon carbide based media that is relatively good wearing and mild cutting. It is especially suited for materials to be welded, brazed, or soldered where exposure to brown fused aluminum oxide cannot be tolerated. (85 lbs. /cubic foot, color: beige with blue/black grain)

DURAMEDIA® 120

DURAMEDIA® 120 is an extremely dense, durable, and abrasive-free ceramic media. Its fine crystalline structure yields superior body strength and fracture resistance. 120 is ideal for chemically accelerated processes and high-energy mass finishing applications. It is best for light burr removal, burnishing, driving loose abrasives, and radiusing.  (120 lbs. /cubic foot, color: brown)

DURAMEDIA® 120-C

DURAMEDIA® 120-C is an aggressive, aluminum oxide based formula (the abrasive version of 120) that creates high density and low wear characteristics in applications where chemical accelerants are not used. It is typically used on tough aerospace alloys such as titanium because of its excellent cut. (120-125 lbs. /cubic foot, color: dark brown)

DURAMEDIA® 140

DURAMEDIA® 140 is the preformed version of our DURALUM® XM product; it has the exact finishing characteristics XM is known to provide but is extruded to different shapes and sizes to minimize lodging. It is ideal for development of a high-color burnish, light burr removal, radius formation, and driving loose abrasives. (140 lbs. /cubic foot, color: dark brown)

DURAMEDIA® 3DCM

DURAMEDIA® 3DCM is a premium aluminum-oxide based formula designed for the hard alloys common in additive manufacturing. It is exceptional for use on aerospace alloys such as titanium. (125 lbs. /cubic foot, color: dark brown)

DURAMEDIA® C

DURAMEDIA® C is a coarser-grained aluminum oxide based ceramic media product that has an excellent metal cut to media wear ratio, making it suitable for a wide variety of applications. The cut and finish characteristics of C have been industry standard for years. (90 lbs. /cubic foot, color: blue)

DURAMEDIA® ECH

DURAMEDIA® ECH is an aluminum oxide based ceramic media product that is used for general-purposes to produce a smooth surface finish due to the grain size of the aluminum oxide abrasive. It is intended for medium cut applications provides a high performance cutting action for deburring and metal removal. (90 lbs. /cubic foot, color: brown)

DURAMEDIA® FB

DURAMEDIA® FB is an extremely hard and long-wearing ceramic media that contains no abrasive. It is recommended for brightening, burnishing, and polishing and is primarily used for burnishing on all ferrous and non-ferrous metals. (85 lbs. /cubic foot, color: off white)

DURAMEDIA® H

DURAMEDIA® H is an aluminum oxide based ceramic media that is tough, fast-cutting, longer-wearing, and efficient media with high density. It is an aggressive media known for quick metal removal and best applied where short cycle times are required. (110 lbs. /cubic foot, color: tan/gray/light brown)

DURALITE® II

DURALITE®II is an aluminum oxide based media that is lightweight with an excellent cut to wear ratio designed for use on delicate parts.  It serves as an alternative to plastic for light deburring and surface conditioning on softer metals. (65 lbs. /cubic foot, color: beige)

DURALITE® II-S

DURALITE®II-S is the silicon carbide version of DURALITE®II. In addition to being lightweight and having an excellent cut to wear ratio, it can be used where fused aluminum oxide exposure is undesirable. It also provides mild cutting action where shorter cycle times are required. (65 lbs. /cubic foot, color: beige)

DURAMEDIA® PWS

DURAMEDIA® PWS is a proprietary media fused with zirconia abrasive and specially formulated for maximum cutting ability on metals, specifically deburring on aerospace metals. It has a mild attrition rate for a media this aggressive. (Approximately 105 lbs. /cubic foot, color: off-white/light tan)

DURAMEDIA® WK

DURAMEDIA® WK is an aluminum oxide based ceramic media that offers efficient and fast-cutting capabilities. This bonding formulation utilizes a high concentration of aluminum oxide blends which results in a low media wear rate. It can be used in all types of mass finishing equipment and has excellent wear characteristics, even when used in high energy machines. (100 lbs. /cubic foot, color: tan)

DURALUM® XA

DURALUM® XA is the ideal tumbling nugget – dense, tough, and free-cutting. It is a true micro-crystalline fused aluminum oxide abrasive. Produced through a unique “chill-cast” process, its solid structure, super-fine crystal size, and carefully controlled chemistry (including titanium dioxide) make it strong and durable. With proper compounding, XA is an excellent burnishing media. (145 lbs. /cubic foot, color: gray/charcoal/black)

DURAMEDIA® XC

DURAMEDIA® XC is an aluminum oxide based tumbling media that is dense, tough, and free-cutting. Produced through a unique “chill-cast” process, its solid structure, super-fine crystal size, and carefully controlled chemistry (including titanium dioxide) make it strong, durable, fast cutting, long wearing, and impact resistant over a wide range of demanding applications. It is also an excellent burnishing media, with proper compounding. (90 lbs. /cubic foot, color: olive green)

DURAMEDIA® Plastic

DURAMEDIA® Plastic Low Density 10

DPLD 10 is a low density resin-bonded plastic media that produces a low micro-inch preplate finish with very mild cutting action. Its applications include buffing, burnishing, or plating to create a smooth, clean, and reflective finish. (68 lbs. /cubic foot, color: blue)

DURAMEDIA® Plastic Low Density 30

DPLD 30 is a fast cutting resin-bonded plastic media that provides a very bright low micro-inch finish. It eliminates two step operations where buffing or plating of parts is required. (75 lbs. /cubic foot, color: maroon)

DURAMEDIA® Plastic Low Density 40

DPLD 40 is a general purpose resin-bonded plastic media for all ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It is fast cutting and provides a smooth matte finish. Its applications include removing burrs, flash, and die marks and blending parting lines easily. (68 lbs. /cubic foot, color: dark green)

DURAMEDIA® Plastic Low Density 40 MC

DPLD 40 MC is a resin-bonded plastic media, and the more aggressive variation of our standard 40 formula. It produces a similar matte finish and covers all the ground of 40 but with a slightly faster cycle time. (70 lbs/cubic foot, color: blue)

DURAMEDIA® Plastic High Density 130

DPHD 130 is a fast cutting, resin-bonded plastic media that provides a low matte finish. Used for deburring and surface metal removal on ferrous and non-ferrous metals, it reduces cycle times and gives a preplate finish.  (88 lbs. /cubic foot, color: light blue)

DURAMEDIA® Plastic High Density 130 EZ

DPHD 130EZ is a fast cutting resin-bonded plastic media designed to work with the most difficult alloys. It can be used across the spectrum of ferrous and non-ferrous metals whenever cycle time is the primary driver.  (90 lbs/cubic foot, color: light green)

DURAMEDIA® Plastic High Performance 230FC

DPHP 230FC is an aggressive, fast cutting, resin-bonded plastic media designed for increased production with reduced cycle times. It is ideal for removing machine lines and forming radius on hard metals. (77 lbs. /cubic foot, color: dark brown)

DURAMEDIA® Plastic High Performance 250FC

DPHP 250FC is the most aggressive cutting, resin-bonded plastic media. It is suited for parts that are to be welded or brazed. Its applications include deburring and surface removal on all ferrous metals. (78 lbs. /cubic foot, color: dark blue)

DURAMEDIA® Plastic High Performance 310MC

DPHP 310MC is a non-aggressive resin-bonded plastic media that provides a very minimal cut. It produces a matte finish with virtually no stock removal. It is ideal for use with chemical accelerants and as a driver of loose abrasives. (60 lbs. /cubic foot, color: black)

DURAMEDIA® Plastic High Performance 350MC

DPHP 350MC is a resin-bonded plastic media that produces an extremely low micro-inch finish with mild cutting action. It is used primarily on ferrous metals that require an extremely fine finish and will be plated, welded, or brazed. (60 lbs. /cubic foot, color: gray)

DURAMEDIA® Steel

DURAMEDIA® Carbon Steel 

This product is made from low-carbon steel in AISI/SAE. It is the most common chemistry of carbon steel. It produces a burr-free, bright, and smooth finish.

DURAMEDIA® Stainless Steel 300 Series

300 Series is the most common chemistry of stainless steel media, and is recommended when complete freedom from rust is essential. It produces a burr-free, bright, and smooth finish. It is beneficial because it can cut finishing times by using more acidic compounds in aggressive processes. Its ability to resist corrosion can eliminate or reduce compounds.
